East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Transport UK are inviting passengers to take part in an innovative digital ticketing trial, joining the 500 travellers already using the system.

The pilot, covering journeys between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, allows customers to enjoy a simpler, smarter way to travel. Using GPS-based technology, the system automatically tracks journeys via mobile phones and charges the lowest possible fare, eliminating the need to pre-purchase tickets or worry about selecting the correct one.

Funded by the Department for Transport, the trial forms part of a broader national initiative to modernise rail travel and make journeys more intuitive. EMR was the first operator to launch the scheme, which is part of a wider effort across the Midlands and the North to replace outdated ticketing systems.

The trial will continue until August 2026, giving passengers ample time to experience the new system.

Simon Pready, Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said:

“We have had a great reaction to the launch of the trial, with more than 500 customers currently taking part and benefiting from a new, seamless way to travel. Digital Pay As You Go is all about making train travel easier, faster and more intuitive. No more fare confusion – just check in and out with your phone and know you’ll automatically pay the best-value fare for your journey. There is still time to sign up, so please register for one of the remaining places via our website.”
