Rail travel across the East Midlands was badly affected earlier today after a fatal incident on the railway near a Nottinghamshire village.

The incident took place close to Attenborough at around 12.45pm. British Transport Police confirmed that officers were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks, where a person was pronounced dead at the scene despite the attendance of emergency services, including paramedics.

East Midlands Railway said the collision meant trains were unable to run in either direction between Nottingham and Long Eaton for a period of time. The disruption also led to delays on wider routes connecting Nottingham with London, Leicester, Derby and Lincoln.

Following emergency response and initial investigations, the railway line has now reopened and services are resuming, although some knock-on delays may continue.
