Man killed in train collision near Beaumont and Sour Lake

A man has died after being struck by a train Wednesday night between Beaumont and Sour Lake, Jefferson County officials confirmed.

The collision occurred just after 10 p.m. on the railroad tracks at Old Sour Lake Road and Meeker Drive. First responders from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services District 3 arrived at the scene and found the man lying in a ditch near the tracks.

Jefferson County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Justin Chesson pronounced the man dead at the scene. According to reports from the train crew, the man appeared to be picking something up on the tracks at the time of the incident.

The identity of the victim has not been released. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is conducting the investigation, which remains ongoing.
