North Wales Rail Network Set for Major Frequency Boost
Rail passengers in North Wales will see a major boost to local and cross-border connectivity this December, with the introduction of two trains per hour between Chester and Wrexham. The increase in frequency forms part of a wider set of timetable enhancements set to come into effect on 14 December.
Transport for Wales says the changes will enhance travel flexibility for communities across the region, supporting both daily commuting and wider regional links. The upgrades sit within the broader Network North Wales developments, aimed at strengthening the area’s rail offering.
Among the headline adjustments is the launch of a new hourly Chester–Wrexham service, doubling the existing frequency. The long-distance 11:23 Cardiff–Holyhead train will also call additionally at Craven Arms at 12:59 and Church Stretton at 13:07. Further improvements include early and late services on the Borderlands Line: a 05:54 departure from Bidston to Wrexham General and a 20:51 return from Wrexham Central to Bidston. Meanwhile, the evening Pwllheli–Machynlleth and Machynlleth–Pwllheli trains on the Cambrian Line are intended to continue as part of the new schedule.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said:
“Railway connections are vital in driving prosperity. These changes will make a real difference to customers, who will benefit from more services across Wales and the Borders. This has been made possible by our £800m investment in brand-new trains for the Wales and Borders network.”
All changes will take effect from 14 December 2025 as part of the broader Wales and Borders timetable update.
