Person Fighting for Life After Being Hit by Train At Gateshead

A person has been left fighting for their life after being struck by a train in Gateshead late on Tuesday evening. Emergency services were called to the railway line close to the Redheugh Bridge after reports of a casualty on the tracks shortly before 11pm on December 30.

A large-scale response was seen near Palmerston Walk, with police officers, paramedics and firefighters all attending the scene. One individual was found to have sustained life-threatening injuries and was given treatment at the location before being taken to hospital.

The casualty was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where they remain under medical care. Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said:

"Officers were called to the railway line in Gateshead at 10.48pm on 30 December to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, and a person was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Ambulance services confirmed that a number of specialist teams were mobilised to deal with the incident.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

"We received a call at 10.55pm on Tuesday 30 December 2025 to reports of concern for a person’s wellbeing on the train lines near Palmerston Walk in Gateshead. We dispatched an ambulance crew, a duty officer, three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAA) who attended by road. We transported one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."

Enquiries remain ongoing as officers continue to gather information surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
