A points failure between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe is causing widespread disruption to rail services, with all lines currently blocked. Passengers travelling between the two stations are likely to experience delays of up to 60 minutes, cancellations, or revised timetables while Network Rail investigates the fault. Disruption is expected to continue until at least 22:30 this evening.

Passengers are being advised to continue with their journeys where possible, but to allow extra time as delays of up to an hour may occur. Ticket acceptance has been arranged for alternative routes, though this is subject to change at short notice, so travellers are urged to check with their train operator before setting off.

The failure of the points, which are critical track components allowing trains to switch between lines, means that no trains can currently pass through the affected section. Network Rail engineers are on site to assess and repair the issue, working to restore services as quickly and safely as possible.

Passengers planning onward travel should be aware that revised routes may add up to an extra hour to their journey times. Operators recommend checking live departure boards and journey updates to avoid unnecessary disruption. While the fault is being resolved, trains that would normally run between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe are being held, cancelled, or rerouted to manage the backlog safely.

Update: 20:03

The line has now reopened. However, services may be delayed or altered while operators work to recover the timetable.
