Stadler and Arriva Nederland have signed a contract for the delivery of five new FLIRT trains, set to operate on the Vechtdallijnen in the Dutch provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe. The introduction of these modern trains will increase capacity, improve connectivity, and enhance passenger comfort on Arriva’s regional network, supporting a more sustainable and efficient transport system in the Netherlands.

The five four-car FLIRT units will expand Arriva’s existing Stadler fleet, which currently includes 165 vehicles in service across the country. The project coincides with the electrification of the Almelo–Mariënberg line, enabling a shift from diesel to energy-efficient electric trains.

Stadler and Arriva have maintained a partnership for almost 20 years, beginning in 2006 with the delivery of GTW trains to the Netherlands. Between 2006 and 2012, Stadler supplied 122 GTW units, followed by 18 WINK trains between 2021 and 2022. From 2016 to 2024, 34 FLIRT trains were delivered for Arriva’s Limburg operations. The new vehicles continue this long-standing collaboration.

Each new FLIRT train will accommodate 457 passengers, with 248 seats including 12 in first class. Interiors are designed for flexibility, offering multifunctional areas that can be adapted for additional seating or bicycle storage depending on the season. Quiet areas provide a space for passengers to work or relax, while dedicated zones for wheelchairs and bicycles ensure accessibility for all.

The trains also feature PRM-compliant restrooms, power sockets, real-time passenger information displays, and clear signage for easier navigation. The exterior will carry Arriva’s RRReis livery, combining shades of purple, blue, and green, while the interior will include refreshed seat upholstery and updated colour schemes to create a bright, welcoming environment.

Annemarie Hoogeveen, regional director at Arriva Nederland, said:

“Since 2012, Arriva has been operating rail services between Zwolle and Emmen, as well as Almelo and Hardenberg. During this time, passenger numbers and customer satisfaction have grown steadily thanks to timetable improvements and the introduction of modern rolling stock. The five new FLIRT units will support these capacity increases between Zwolle and Emmen and further strengthen regional rail connectivity.”

Pascal Kuenzler, Sales Director for Benelux at Stadler, added:

“With this latest contract, Stadler and Arriva reaffirm their shared commitment to providing modern, accessible and environmentally friendly mobility solutions. The new FLIRT trains will support our customer’s sustainability goals and enhance the passenger experience across the Vechtdallijnen network. We are proud of the trust placed in us and honored to contribute to the continued development of modern and reliable rail transport in the Netherlands.”
