Rail Line Closed After Fatal Incident Between St Helens and Warrington

Rail services between St Helens and Warrington were brought to a halt after a fatal incident on the line on Sunday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the railway near Winwick, between Earlestown and Warrington Bank Quay, following reports of a casualty on the tracks. The line was closed in both directions to allow services to respond safely.

Passengers travelling through the area were warned of disruption, with trains suspended while the incident was dealt with.

British Transport Police confirmed that officers attended alongside paramedics after being alerted at around 6.40pm on April 12.

A force spokesman said:

“We were called to an area of the line in Winwick at around 6.40pm on Sunday, April 12, following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Officers attended along with paramedics but, sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The line remained shut for a period as investigations were carried out and the scene was made safe, leading to delays and cancellations for passengers travelling through the corridor.
