The RMT union has strongly criticised Amey Rail’s plans to cut 59 jobs on the Core Valley Lines (CVL) transformation project, warning the move could spark industrial action.

Amey Rail confirmed it intends to make 59 roles redundant across operational, engineering, supervisory, and management positions by March 2026. The company said the cuts are linked to the completion of the main programme of works in 2025, despite project activity continuing until at least 2027.

RMT has questioned both the scale and timing of the redundancies, which were announced just before the Christmas period, and raised concerns over the fairness and practicality of the consultation process. The union is calling for the immediate withdrawal of the proposals and a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies. It is also urging Amey Rail to offer enhanced terms for voluntary departures and to explore redeployment opportunities across the wider rail business.

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said:

“These proposals are completely unacceptable and have caused huge anxiety for our members. Amey Rail is attempting to push through large-scale job losses and we will not accept that. Announcing redundancies at this scale, at this time of year, shows a shocking disregard for the workforce and the skills they have built up delivering this project. RMT will oppose these plans in the strongest possible terms and we will not rule out industrial action as a response."
