Appenzeller Bahnen to Launch Modern Railcars on Rorschach–Heiden Line
Appenzeller Bahnen is set to modernise its fleet on the Rorschach–Heiden line with two new adhesion and rack-and-pinion railcars from Stadler, scheduled to enter service at the end of 2028. The investment, valued at around 17.5 million Swiss francs, aims to improve reliability, comfort, and operational efficiency.
The new 21-metre vehicles will replace the line’s existing regular train from 1998, along with two much older reserve vehicles dating from 1953 and 1967, which have exceeded their technical service life. Retrofitting the older stock is not feasible, and they also fail to meet current accessibility standards.
Having two identical railcars offers operational flexibility. They can operate in double traction during peak periods to increase capacity. Lighter construction and the latest technology are expected to reduce energy and maintenance costs. The new trains are fully compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act, featuring low-floor access, wheelchair spaces, areas for prams and bicycles, air conditioning, infotainment systems, and charging sockets.
A highlight for passengers is the reintroduction of first-class seating on the line, located at the front and rear of the train next to the driver’s cab. This layout offers a unique view of the route and Lake Constance, while giving travellers an up-close experience of train operations. The popular summer service with open observation cars will also continue.
Looking ahead, the railcars are designed for future automation, with plans to introduce fully automated operation (GoA4) around 2035, marking a major step in Appenzeller Bahnen’s long-term operating strategy.
The Rorschach–Heiden line, in service since 1875, celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The new investment, supported by the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden along with the federal government, ensures the line will continue to meet modern standards and passenger expectations.
