ScotRail Boosts Services for 1872 Cup Clash at Hampden
ScotRail is gearing up to accommodate thousands of rugby supporters heading to Barclays Hampden this weekend for the eagerly awaited 1872 Cup showdown between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby.
The 1872 Cup, one of the sport’s oldest rivalries, marks the annual clash between Scotland’s two professional rugby sides. Its origins date back to 1872, commemorating the world’s first inter-district rugby match, and the fixture remains a highlight of the Scottish sporting calendar, blending history, regional pride, and fierce competition.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00pm on Saturday, 20 December. To ensure fans can reach the stadium smoothly, ScotRail will operate extra services with additional seating before and after the match. These trains will run between Glasgow Central and Mount Florida station, which is just a five-minute walk from Barclays Hampden.
Supporters are being urged to travel early and allow sufficient time to enter the stadium. Queuing systems will be in place at Glasgow Central prior to kick-off and at Mount Florida after the final whistle, helping to manage crowds safely. ScotRail staff will also be on hand at key locations to assist passengers and maintain smooth travel flow.
Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said:
“ScotRail is proud to support the 1872 Cup and help thousands of fans travel to Hampden for this historic match. We’re adding more services and more seats to make journeys as safe and comfortable as possible. Travelling by train is a convenient, reliable, and sustainable way to get to the game. To ensure a smooth experience, fans should plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, and buy their return tickets to Mount Florida in advance.”
