Hundreds of families across Essex were treated to a festive rail experience this December, thanks to a series of Santa-themed train journeys organised by the Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership (ESSCRP) in partnership with N.E.S.T. (North Essex Support Team) and Greater Anglia.

The charity N.E.S.T., which provides a wide range of assistance to vulnerable residents including household essentials, winter events, and food support, helped bring the celebrations to life for families facing financial hardship. Over the course of four journeys, more than 200 adults and children enjoyed carriages decorated for the season, complete with festive music, refreshments, and seasonal cheer.

Onboard, Santa and his helpers handed out gifts, sweets, drinks, colouring books, and even practical items like toothbrushes to children. Each child was also invited to pick an extra present to give to their parents on Christmas Day, adding a personal touch to the festive outing.

The trips took place on 6 and 7 December, with families supported by N.E.S.T. joining from community groups in Walton, Colchester, and Harwich, as well as residents of local homeless shelters and women’s refuges. On the first day, one group travelled from Walton-on-the-Naze to Colchester Town, while another took the return journey. Two further trips on 7 December ran between Harwich and Manningtree.

Funding for the event came in part from Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund, while all gifts were provided by N.E.S.T. through its ongoing fundraising efforts. Beyond Christmas, the charity supports Essex families year-round with essentials such as starter packs for new homes, emergency supplies, and prom outfits for young people.

Jane Stewart, Community Rail Officer for ESSCRP, said:

“These festive rail trips gave around 50 families the chance to enjoy a truly special day out, something many of them simply wouldn’t be able to experience otherwise. Seeing the children’s excitement as they met Santa onboard was incredibly heartwarming, and we’re delighted to work with N.E.S.T. and Greater Anglia to make this happen.”

Scott Dolling, Greater Anglia’s Partnerships Manager, added:

“We were pleased to support this event, which has delivered real benefits to disadvantaged families on our network. We are very grateful to the Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership for the fantastic work they do to promote social inclusion and sustainable travel. It’s great to see the railway in East Anglia delivering social value back to the communities it serves.”
