Siemens Mobility and Railpool to open new locomotive hub at Verona Interporto
Siemens Mobility and Railpool have announced plans to develop a new expert locomotive maintenance center at Verona Interporto, Italy’s largest integrated traffic hub. The companies have signed a preliminary agreement to purchase a 15,000 square metre plot from Consorzio ZAI, with a joint investment of around €20 million.
The facility will serve as an “open access” depot, offering maintenance for locomotives from multiple manufacturers. It will include five tracks for light maintenance and a track equipped with a wheel lathe, allowing testing of MS and DC locomotives and servicing across all major European signaling systems. The project supports the anticipated modal shift toward rail expected by 2032, when the Brenner Base Tunnel is due to double rail capacity across the Alps.
Designed along the strategic Verona-Brenner corridor, the Partner Rail Service Center will provide light maintenance, routine inspections, and minor adjustments to ensure locomotives remain operationally ready. The hub will complement Siemens Mobility’s existing depot in Novara, which has served more than 120 locomotives since 2015 along the Rhine-Alpine TEN-T corridor.
Michael Peter, CEO Siemens Mobility, said:
“Together with Railpool, we are strengthening rail freight on the strategic Verona-Brenner corridor. This dedicated locomotive hub is equipped with state-of-the-art maintenance technology to give our customers maximum availability and efficiency. It will support the shift of freight from road to rail as the Brenner Base Tunnel opens and become an important part of our European depot and service network.”
Torsten Lehnert, CEO of Railpool, said:
“With our new maintenance hub in Verona, we are strengthening our service network across Europe’s key logistics corridors. This investment underscores our long-term commitment to delivering reliable, full-service locomotive leasing solutions that support the evolving needs of customers throughout the continent.”
