Stadler has secured a contract to deliver eight CITYLINK tram-trains for the Danish city of Aarhus, a move designed to strengthen the city’s light rail network and improve winter reliability. The vehicles feature onboard batteries, allowing them to operate seamlessly even if overhead wires are iced over, while the agreement includes options for twelve additional units and spare parts management.

This new deal, signed on 2 December, continues a longstanding partnership between Stadler and Aarhus Letbane, which has seen Stadler supply trams and tram-trains to the city’s transport system in recent years. The CITYLINK vehicles will be designed and manufactured at Stadler Valencia, marking the next step in Aarhus’ commitment to safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport.

Built to withstand Aarhus’ harsh winter conditions, CITYLINK tram-trains combine traction batteries with hybrid operation, enabling autonomous running when overhead lines are compromised. Their dual capability allows them to travel across urban tram networks and regional railway lines without transfers, simplifying journeys and making public transport more appealing.

Each four-car unit accommodates up to 324 passengers, including 152 seats, 16 of which are foldable to provide adaptable layouts for higher capacity and comfort. The design prioritises energy efficiency, passenger experience, and low emissions, reflecting the city’s broader sustainability goals.

Accessibility has been integrated throughout the design. Sliding steps on the end cars provide level boarding, and each vehicle has two wheelchair spaces in the end cars. A flat low floor with only minimal steps ensures easy movement for all passengers, and the CITYLINK vehicles meet all applicable PRM standards.

The project reinforces Stadler’s leadership in the tram-train segment, offering a modern transport solution that connects urban and regional communities while promoting sustainable mobility.

Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia, said:

“This agreement embodies our shared vision for sustainable mobility. Together with Aarhus Letbane, we are committed to creating solutions that make public transport more attractive and accessible for all. With CITYLINK, we are helping Aarhus move toward a smarter, greener, and fully integrated transport system that meets the needs of today while anticipating those of tomorrow.”

Mie Krog, Chair of the Board at Aarhus Letbane, added:

“Adding more trains strengthens the Light Rail as a vital connection between Aarhus city and the countryside. This is fully in line with our vision of providing reliable and efficient transport for East Jutland – on time, every time. And it’s a major benefit for our passengers and for the entire region.”
