Swindon rail lines shut after person struck by train as major disruption hits
All rail lines in the Swindon area have been blocked following an incident in which a person was struck by a train.
Emergency services were called to the scene, with all trains in the vicinity brought to an immediate stand to allow crews to safely access the railway. As a result, Swindon railway station and surrounding lines are currently closed, with disruption expected to continue for the rest of the day.
Great Western Railway is working alongside Network Rail and emergency responders to manage the situation as quickly and sensitively as possible.
Passengers are being warned to expect significant delays, with journeys potentially taking up to 90 minutes longer than usual. Some services will be altered to run only part of their planned routes, while others may be cancelled entirely.
To prevent trains becoming stranded between stations, longer-distance services may be held at platforms away from the affected area until it is safe to proceed.
Travellers are being advised to consider postponing their journeys until normal service resumes. Those needing assistance are encouraged to speak to station or onboard staff, or use help points where available.
Any ticket acceptance or alternative travel arrangements may change at short notice, and passengers are urged to check with their operator before setting out.
