The “Alter Schwede” intermodal block train is celebrating ten years of connecting Germany and Sweden, marking a decade of reliable and efficient service in European combined transport. Launched in 2015 through a partnership between DB Cargo, Kombiverkehr, and Spedition Bode, the service runs directly from Lübeck via Hallsberg to Rosersberg near Stockholm. From its inception, the project aimed to provide a stable, sustainable, and economical alternative to road freight, a mission it continues to fulfil today.

The train’s longevity and success have been underpinned by close collaboration among its partners, a flexible approach to operations, and a willingness to embrace innovative solutions to challenges. Over the years, the service has been continually refined to meet evolving market demands, ensuring it remains a competitive option for shippers.

Domestic traffic between Malmö and Hallsberg/Rosersberg has further bolstered the “Alter Schwede,” enhancing the Scandinavian corridor and highlighting the growing importance of regional cooperation in freight logistics.

Looking back on a decade of operation, the “Alter Schwede” is more than a simple transport link; it is a resilient logistics solution with long-term sustainability at its core. As it enters its eleventh year, the service is set to continue evolving, adapting to new market needs, and strengthening its role in European intermodal transport.
