TfW and BTP boost patrols to keep passengers safe this Christmas
Transport for Wales and the British Transport Police have launched a joint effort to enhance passenger safety throughout December, with the return of Operation Genesis and Garland. Designed to support those travelling during one of the busiest periods of the year, the initiative brings extra officers and rail staff onto the Wales and Borders network to increase visibility and provide assistance where needed.
The operation will see high-visibility patrols across stations and services, backed by plain-clothes teams targeting sexual harassment, anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related disruption. The aim is to deter crime, respond swiftly to incidents and provide reassurance to customers making festive journeys.
First introduced in 2022, Operation Genesis and Garland has been re-established for the 2025 festive season, with activity concentrated on Fridays and Saturdays when passenger numbers peak. By deploying more staff at key locations, both organisations hope to ensure smoother, safer travel for shoppers, partygoers and families heading home for Christmas.
Georgie Wills, Customer Delivery and Events Planning Manager at TfW, said:
“The festive season is one of the busiest times of the year, and our priority is making sure customers feel safe, supported, and able to travel with confidence. By working closely with British Transport Police and our security partners again this year, this operation will provide extra reassurance at key stations and help ensure everyone gets home safely to enjoy Christmas with their loved ones.”
Andy Morgan, BTP Superintendent for Wales, added:
"We're working in conjunction with Transport for Wales to provide as many resources as possible and will have a visible police presence throughout the festive period. Operation Genesis and Garland, delivered alongside Transport for Wales staff and security team, will help ensure every passenger enjoys a safe journey. We wish all passengers a safe and peaceful Christmas."
