TPE Donates Retired Benches to Support Local Railway Charity
A set of retired station benches has been given a second life after TransPennine Express donated them to a heritage railway in North Lincolnshire.
Nine benches, previously in use at Scunthorpe railway station, have been transferred to the Appleby Frodingham Railway rather than being scrapped. The move forms part of a wider effort to reduce waste while supporting local community initiatives.
The benches have now been installed across platforms and waiting areas at the heritage site, where they will be used by visitors throughout the year. The railway, located within the historic Scunthorpe steelworks complex, plays a key role in preserving the area’s industrial heritage.
Operated largely by volunteers, the Appleby Frodingham Railway depends on donations and local backing to maintain and enhance its facilities. The contribution from TransPennine Express provides practical support while also helping to improve the visitor experience.
By choosing to repurpose the benches, the operator has avoided the environmental impact associated with disposal, aligning with its broader sustainability goals.
Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead for TPE said:
“We’re delighted to see the benches find a new home where they can continue to be appreciated. Supporting the Appleby Frodingham Railway not only reduces waste but also strengthens our connection with a much-loved local charity. It’s a great example of how small decisions can make a big difference for the environment and the community.”
The initiative highlights how relatively small changes in asset management can deliver both environmental benefits and meaningful support for local heritage organisations.
