TransPennine Express has warned passengers that services between Manchester and Sheffield will be suspended from 6pm on Thursday 8 January until Saturday 10 January due to the forecast for heavy snowfall from Storm Goretti.

During this period, no travel will be possible between the two cities. Services between Liverpool Lime Street and Cleethorpes will continue to run, but only between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road, and between Sheffield and Cleethorpes, in both directions.

Passengers on other parts of the TPE network are being advised to check travel updates in advance, as delays and cancellations are possible across the system.

Tickets for journeys on the affected route can be used at no extra cost either earlier on Thursday 8 January or on any service up to and including Monday 12 January 2026. TPE tickets are also valid between Manchester and Sheffield on East Midlands Railway and Northern services. Full refunds are available for those who no longer wish to travel.

Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TransPennine Express, said:

“Our top priority is the safety of our customers and colleagues. In line with other operators, customers cannot travel between Manchester and Sheffield from 6pm on Thursday 8 January until Saturday 10 January due to severe weather warnings. We strongly urge anyone planning to travel on Thursday evening or Friday to reconsider their plans and follow the guidance provided. Customers travelling on other parts of our network should check the latest updates and be prepared for disruption, including possible cancellations.”
