The Railway 200 ‘Inspiration’ Train is returning to the Greater Anglia network, extending its tour after drawing large crowds during earlier visits to Norwich and Lowestoft last summer. The travelling exhibition, which marks 200 years of the modern railway, is designed to bring the story of rail’s past, present and future to communities across the region.

Its latest stop at Cambridge station on 31 January and 1 February proved especially popular, with more than 1,500 people visiting over the two days. Following that success, the train is now set to continue its journey to further destinations served by Greater Anglia.

Next on the itinerary are Colchester station on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 February 2026, followed by Clacton-on-Sea station on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 February 2026. The tour will then conclude in the region with a weekend visit to Hertford East station on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 February 2026.

The ‘Inspiration’ Train forms part of the nationwide Railway 200 programme, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. That line is widely recognised as the world’s first modern passenger railway and is seen as a turning point in transport history.

By travelling across the Greater Anglia network, the exhibition aims to showcase how railways have connected communities, supported local economies and helped shape the region over the last two centuries. The display is open to visitors of all ages and places a strong emphasis on encouraging young people to consider future careers in rail, engineering and transport.

The train itself does not carry passengers between locations. Entry to the exhibition begins at 10am, with the final admission at 4pm and closing at 5pm. Visits are expected to last up to an hour. A virtual version of the exhibition is also planned for those unable to attend in person, while a number of local school groups are scheduled to visit during the Colchester and Clacton stops.

Martin Beable, Greater Anglia’s Managing Director, said:

“It has been fantastic to see the response from visitors at Cambridge, and we are delighted to now welcome the 'Inspiration' Train across more of our network. Rail has played a vital role in the history of our region, and this exhibition is a brilliant way to bring that story to life while also inspiring the next generation.”

Emma Roberts, Programme Manager for Railway 200, said:

“Inspiration is a fun, free and fascinating way to learn about the past, present and future of rail. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a rail enthusiast or simply curious about a British innovation that changed the world. We’re excited to bring Inspiration to East Anglia and we look forward to welcoming you aboard!”
