Thousands Engage With Railway 200 Exhibition During Southport Visit
Southport station became a focal point for rail heritage and education between 10 and 13 January, when it hosted the Railway 200 Inspiration Train. Over the course of four days, more than 3,000 people visited the exhibition, alongside more than 240 school pupils who took part in eight specially organised sessions.
The Inspiration Train stop formed part of a national tour marking 200 years of the modern railway. The free attraction, designed to be accessible and family-friendly, was co-curated with the National Railway Museum and aimed to highlight the past, present and future of rail travel in Britain.
Visitors were invited to take part in an interactive experience that went beyond static displays. The exhibition showcased key moments in railway innovation, presented practical engineering challenges and introduced a wide range of careers within the rail industry, including roles that are often less visible to the public.
Reaction from those attending was strongly positive, with many praising the exhibition’s engaging approach. Visitors described the experience as “brilliant” and “fascinating,” while one attendee commented, “If you or your kids like trains, history or anything interactive, I would recommend you check it out.”
The event was hosted by Merseyrail, whose Managing Director Neil Grabham said:
“We were delighted to welcome the Railway 200 exhibition train to Southport. This event was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the heritage and future of rail, reminding us of the vital role the railway plays in connecting people and communities every day. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event such a success.”
