TSSA “Deeply Shocked” by LNER Train Attack, Urges Stronger Safety Measures
Rail union TSSA has expressed deep shock and sadness following the violent incident aboard an LNER service in Cambridgeshire on Saturday evening (Nov 1st), which left several passengers critically injured.
The union extended its sympathies to those harmed and praised the actions of police, paramedics and rail staff who responded at the scene. According to TSSA, the professionalism and bravery shown by emergency teams and transport workers undoubtedly prevented further tragedy.
Representing thousands of transport and rail employees nationwide, TSSA said it has long warned of escalating risks faced by front-line staff across the network. A recent report released by the union on Violence Against Transport Workers highlighted the alarming rise in abuse and assaults within the sector.
In light of the attack, TSSA renewed its call for strengthened safety measures, robust security protocols and a zero-tolerance approach to aggression on public transport. It stressed that no employee or passenger should be exposed to violence simply for travelling or carrying out their duties.
Commenting, TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust, said: “This is an appalling attack on passengers and rail workers alike. Our immediate priority is for the welfare of the injured and all those traumatised by what has happened.
“Transport networks must be safe for everyone, both the travelling public and the staff who serve them. We call on the operator and government to act swiftly to review security, to support the affected workers, and to ensure nothing like this happens again.”
The union said it stands ready to work alongside rail companies, government and police to strengthen protections for staff and passengers, including counselling services and support for traumatised employees.
