Young person killed at Chestnut Grove crossing; independent review underway
A young person tragically lost their life on 26 November 2025 after being struck by a train at Chestnut Grove footpath crossing in Nottinghamshire, located between Lowdham and Burton Joyce stations. The train involved was travelling at approximately 60 mph (97 km/h) at the time of the collision.
Chestnut Grove footpath crossing provides pedestrian access between Burton Joyce village and nearby footpaths leading to the River Trent. The crossing is equipped with gates on both sides of the railway and features signage instructing users on safe crossing procedures.
An independent investigation has been launched to establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal accident. Investigators will examine a range of factors, including the decisions and actions of those involved, any prior incidents at the crossing, and how risk is managed at Chestnut Grove, including coordination between Network Rail, local authorities, and other organisations.
The review will also consider Network Rail’s broader strategy for assessing and mitigating risks at footpath crossings, alongside any underlying factors that may have contributed to the incident.
The investigation is independent of industry or regulator-led inquiries by the railway sector or the Office of Rail and Road. Findings and safety recommendations will be published at the conclusion of the investigation and made available on the organisation’s website.
