Ten young rail enthusiasts were given the chance to step into the role of train guard for the day after being invited aboard London Northwestern Railway’s newest electric trains. The children, aged between six and 11, took part in the experience on Thursday 12 February as ‘Junior Conductors’.

Travelling between Milton Keynes and Crewe along the West Coast Main Line, the youngsters were handed real responsibilities during the journey. They made onboard announcements, checked tickets and greeted passengers, gaining first-hand experience of life on the railway.

Each child was chosen to represent their hometown station on LNR’s Trent Valley route, which links London with destinations across Cheshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire. For the occasion, they were equipped with high-visibility jackets, ties and cravats, along with a whistle to complete the look.

Dhanwin, aged 7, from Nuneaton said:

“I was so excited to become a conductor for the day and learn all about the different things you have to do. I checked lots of tickets and even announced my local station stop at Nuneaton – it was amazing. I learnt so much from the conductors and had the best day ever.”

Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director at London Northwestern Railway, said:

“Our junior conductors did an excellent job today. Not only did they take their duties very seriously, they made our passengers smile throughout their journey. Working on the railway is a rewarding career and we are determined to help inspire the next generation so it was a joy to see so much enthusiasm from these ten children. I hope to see some familiar faces again when they embark on their future careers in the railway.”
