A 16-year-old has denied murdering a fellow teenager in a fatal stabbing at a railway station that unfolded in front of shocked passengers.

The boy, who cannot be identified because of his age, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on January 16 charged with the murder of Joshua Ingram. Joshua, also 16, died outside Seaford railway station on September 10 last year after suffering two stab wounds. Police have previously described the killing as a targeted attack.

Dressed in a grey sweatshirt and jogging bottoms, the defendant confirmed his name as proceedings began before entering a not guilty plea to murder. He also denied a charge of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

However, the court heard that the teenager admitted possessing a knife on the day Joshua was killed. Two other boys, aged 14 and 16, have already pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the same incident.

Earlier hearings were told that Joshua was stabbed in the back and the side during the attack. Prosecutors allege the violence stemmed from a dispute over a minor drug debt.

Prosecutor Joseph Lewis told the court:

“On September 10, the victim and a friend were walking to the train station where he was ambushed. The prosecutor said a knife was plunged into Joshua in his back and again in his side. This was a targeted and vicious attack over nothing more than a very minor drug debt,”

A trial in the case is expected to take place in the summer.
