ScotRail has announced that St Kenneth’s Primary School and Nursery Class will become the official station adopters at the newly redeveloped East Kilbride station, following the completion of major upgrade works.

The partnership has been formed through ScotRail’s Adopt a Station scheme, which invites schools, community organisations and charities to take an active role in caring for their local station and helping to create a welcoming environment for passengers.

As part of the adoption, pupils and staff from St Kenneth’s Nursery Class will work alongside ScotRail on a range of creative initiatives, including artwork displays, planting projects and seasonal decorations. The activities are designed to link the station more closely with the East Kilbride community and give children a sense of ownership over the space.

The scheme also provides educational opportunities, allowing pupils to learn about rail safety, sustainability and the importance of public transport within their local area. Planters and plants for the children to look after are being supplied by AmcoGiffen, the contractor responsible for the station’s redevelopment.

The revamped East Kilbride station represents a £9 million investment and forms part of wider improvements along the East Kilbride to Glasgow line. The broader East Kilbride Enhancement Project was officially completed in December 2025, with a ceremony attended by Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport.

Delivered by Network Rail and funded by the Scottish Government, the £144 million programme supports the decarbonisation of Scotland’s railway while also improving reliability on the route. From Sunday 14 December 2025, ScotRail introduced modern Class 380 electric trains on services between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central.

Paul McKay, ScotRail Communications Director, said:

“We’re delighted St Kenneth’s Nursery has joined the ScotRail family through our ‘Adopt a Station’ programme. Their involvement will help bring the new East Kilbride station to life and strengthen the connections between the railway and the local community. The East Kilbride Enhancement Project is all about delivering a better, greener railway for future generations, so it’s fantastic to see young people getting involved and preparing to make their mark on the station.”

Jacqui Greenlees, St Kenneth’s Early Years Team Leader, said:

“With little hands and big hearts, St Kenneth's Nursery is proud to adopt East Kilbride railway station. We look forward to making it bloom with vibrant colours and creativity, and to cultivate a sense of belonging and pride in our local area.”
