Passengers and communities along the Ipswich to Cambridge railway are being invited to help shape its identity, as Greater Anglia and the Ipswich to Cambridge Community Rail Partnership (CRP) launch a competition to find a promotional name for the line.

The CRP, established in Autumn 2024, was created to support and enhance rail services along the important regional corridor. In recent months, a dedicated officer and chair have been appointed and priorities set, marking the next phase in its development. Now organisers say giving the route a distinctive promotional name will help strengthen its presence and recognition in the years ahead.

Running between two historic and economically significant centres, the line links a wide range of destinations — from the colleges of Cambridge and the marina at Ipswich to the horseracing hub of Newmarket and the heritage of Bury St. Edmunds. With sweeping countryside views along the way, the partnership believes a strong name should reflect the character and diversity of the areas it serves.

The chosen title is intended to help the CRP deepen ties between the railway and local communities. Plans include promoting rail for work, education, leisure, shopping and tourism, while supporting stations as valued local assets. The newly appointed CRP officer is already working with groups and organisations across the route, with ambitions to expand collaboration further. Activities could range from promotional campaigns and community events to station improvements, involving arts, history and sports groups among others.

Tracey Harding, Chair of the Ipswich to Cambridge CRP said:

“As part of our plans to build awareness of the Ipswich to Cambridge line and the attractive locations it serves, as well as support the work of our new CRP, we’re looking for a name that captures the essence of the area. We know reinforcing our local links with an appropriate name will help us strengthen ties with the local community and increase passenger numbers.”

Jonathan Denby, Head of Corporate Affairs, Greater Anglia, said:

“We’re pleased to launch this competition with the Ipswich to Cambridge CRP as part of our joint plans to help promote and develop train services along this key regional route. A promotional name for the line will help us raise its profile and encourage more people to take the train, visit the exciting places along it, and support the local economy. We look forward to receiving people’s suggestions, choosing an appropriate name for the CRP and ensuring the Ipswich to Cambridge line continues to thrive in the years ahead.”
