CSX has confirmed a $670 million agreement with Wabtec Corporation to refresh and modernise its locomotive fleet, combining new-build power with upgrades to existing assets and the introduction of digital operating technology.

Under the deal, CSX will acquire 100 new Evolution Series locomotives and modernise 50 of its older D9 units. The programme also includes a package of digital systems and support services intended to enhance efficiency across the network.

The new Evolution Series locomotives are expected to strengthen fleet performance through improved fuel efficiency, increased tractive effort and enhanced reliability. They are designed to lower fuel consumption while maintaining the capability required for heavy-haul and long-distance operations.

Alongside the new-build order, ageing D9 locomotives will be converted from DC to AC traction. The upgrades are intended to extend the service life of the units, improve fleet standardisation and enable the use of advanced control and diagnostic technologies. CSX expects the modernised locomotives to deliver gains in fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability.

Both the new and rebuilt locomotives will be fitted with Trip Optimizer with Smart Horsepower per Ton, an EPA-certified system designed to support more efficient locomotive operation.

Delivery of the Evolution Series locomotives is scheduled to begin this year, while the upgraded locomotives are due to start entering service from 2027.

Rogerio Mendonca, President, Freight Equipment at Wabtec said:

“CSX’s fleet modernization initiative underscores its strong commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and delivering reliable customer service. Our unique partnership supports CSX’s strategic approach to long term fleet planning. By combining new and modernized locomotives with our industry-proven digital solutions, we expect to continue supporting improvements in fuel performance, operational efficiency, and reliability across CSX’s rail operations.”

Mike Cory, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at CSX said:

“Our locomotive fleet is a fundamental element of our safe and reliable railroad. Modernizing these critical assets strengthens network performance and supports the level of service our customers depend on.”
