Siemens Mobility recently hosted Lee Pitcher MP, Member of Parliament for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, at its Goole Rail Village in East Yorkshire, highlighting the company’s major investment in the region. The £240 million project is expected to create up to 1,000 direct jobs, with around 1,700 more across the supply chain, and is already producing new Piccadilly line trains for London. Plans are also in place to assemble Bakerloo line trains and future battery bi-mode trains, offering transformative solutions for UK rail travel.

During his visit, Mr Pitcher learned about Siemens Mobility’s focus on building a diverse and skilled workforce. The site currently supports over 40 apprentices, while initiatives such as Women in Manufacturing and employee resource groups, including Disability, EmBRACE, Pride, and Women’s Networks, promote inclusion and professional development.

The MP also toured the site’s plans for future battery bi-mode trains. Already operational in Germany, this technology could replace diesel trains on unelectrified routes, potentially saving the UK £3.5 billion over 35 years and cutting CO2 emissions by around 12 million tonnes. Siemens is set to assemble these trains at Goole, securing further skilled employment in East Yorkshire. The facility already manufactures 80% of the next generation of Piccadilly line trains.

Lee Pitcher said:

“As the Member of Parliament for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, I welcome this investment in manufacturing and technology in our region. Siemens Mobility chose this area because our local workforce has dedication and skill. This facility offers benefits to my constituents. The creation of jobs, the commitment to local suppliers, and the work on battery bi-mode trains align with my support for net-zero and rail connectivity. This shows dedication to economic growth and a greener future for the people I represent.”

Niraj Sondhi, Commercial Director at Siemens Mobility, added:

"We were very pleased to host Lee Pitcher MP at our Goole Rail Village. As a significant contributor to local employment, offering jobs, apprenticeships, and training for local people, his visit underscored our shared commitment to boosting regional prosperity and transforming rail travel and transport.”

The Goole Rail Village comprises a train manufacturing facility, a components facility, and a logistics and distribution centre, with a new bogie assembly and service centre currently under construction, further cementing the site’s role in generating skilled jobs and supporting economic growth across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
