British Transport Police are appealing for a key witness to come forward after an assault at Digby & Sowton railway station in Exeter, during which the individual stepped in to stop the attack.

The incident took place at around 10.45pm on Thursday 30 October 2025. Officers say a young man chased another man before assaulting him on the ramp leading up to the station footbridge. A witness then left an Exeter-bound train and intervened, bringing the assault to an end.

Police have described the witness as a white man with a beard. At the time, he was wearing a black baseball cap featuring the logo of a local brewery, along with a blue and white checked hooded jacket, dark trousers and black and white trainers.

Investigators believe the man who intervened may hold important information that could assist with their enquiries and are keen to speak with him as soon as possible.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) and has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.

Anyone who is the witness, or who believes they may know who he is, is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 2500132253. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
